Muslims in the Media

  1. Muslims in the media is an example that, unfortunately, the media sometimes tell people what to think, but not to what to think about. I agree that portrait of Muslim in the Western media is mainly negative. Sometimes “Muslim” is synonym of “terrorist”, but if we use the same principles and stereotypes about communities, it is possible to say that all “Catholics” are “pedophiles”, American style of education in high school encourages children to take a gun and kill each other, that is not true, no doubt!
Western people should understand that Muslims are similar members of the world society and they are not more dangerous than atheist or Christians. Every religion or ethnic community has its good and bad representatives. On the other hand, Muslim leaders should contribute more effort in creating fair image of Islam in the Western world and pay more attention to everyday communication with public.

  2. Hello Unyp, Media and Society (what an original name! ;-)

I couldn't agree with you more - all religions (and the same goes for all other subgroups in a society) have extremists and other "hate-spreaders" among them, just as they have moderates and tolerant members. Luckily, the latter ones are in majority, which however does not seem to be reflected in the mainstream media... And yes, I too believe the Muslim authorities could do a bit more to balance the often negative portrayal of their religion by supplying a more positive message/image. But then again, I understand the possible notion that it might be under their dignity to have to defend themselves and their faith... It is a tough issue, indeed.
